Our Farm

At our family-owned farm in Peers, Alberta, located in the heart of Yellowhead County, we believe in traditional farming practices that prioritize the well-being of our animals.

We married in 1998 and took over the family Dairy Farm (then Foothills Dairy) in 2001. In 2015 we sold out the Dairy operations, and took some time off to travel with our family before they grew up (it goes fast!!) and explore our options. We have travelled to South America (Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay & Chile) as well as throughout Canada and the US. But in the end, our roots brought us back home....to the family farm....

Here, you will find a commitment to quality and sustainability in everything we do. From our provincially inspected beef, lamb, poultry, and pork to our locally sourced hay, straw, and grain, we take great care in ensuring that our products are the best they can be.

All our animals are fed a balanced ration of grains, grasses, and mineral supplements. We do not take food (like old donuts for example) from grocery stores. The pigs might get a few peels from our garden veggies as a treat from our supper prep, but they are NEVER fed meat or cast off baking. The chickens also get some table scraps as a treat, but the bulk of all the animals diets is a proper ration.

That's why our meat tastes good. That's why the animals are healthy.

We have a large coop and chicken run, and try and let the chickens free range depending on predator danger and the season. We have lost chickens to owls, hawks, skunks, coyotes, and foxes. Our laying hens are special to us, so  we adjust accordingly. We have mixed heritage breed chickens with a rainbow of colored eggs just because it's fun.

We book Thanksgiving/Christmas turkeys in the spring, and start our broilers mid-may when the weather is warming up. We try and do 2 batches during the warm season. We have a large open air mobile run for the turkeys. They often escape and we have to herd them back in with branches like medieval peasants. It's hard not to get attached to turkeys, just so you know. They are silly creatures.

Our broilers are now raised in a barn  with a large overhead door that we can open for fresh air and daylight. They have a huge pen to run around in. The turkeys took over their "chicken tractor". We have found the broilers are more susceptible to inclement weather, so we would rather keep them higher and dryer than risk having to treat illness.

The sheep have a variety of large pens at their disposal, depending on their life stage, (such as lambing), which they completely disregard daily. They do a great job mowing grass in the summer months (and precious flowers, shrubs, and veggies).

Our beef cattle are fed at feed bunks in huge pens, and rotational pastured in the summer. People often ask about grass fed beef..... All cows eat grass - as do ours. The problem is that we live in Canada with only about 4 months of growing weather. So, our grass may be in the form of silage or bales due to 8 months of "winter".

We choose to grain finish for proper marbling. Alberta Beef is world renowned BECAUSE of our cooler weather, and the barley x wheat x cooler weather makes for an exceptional tasing product. We have travelled to the US and tasted corn finished beef. It definitely wasn't our favorite, and we simply cannot get 4lbs of gain per day off grass like they do in Argentina, where Doug also has visited first hand. "Grass Fed" is a clever marketing term, but that's all. Some farmers do grass FINISH, but we prefer the taste of a proper grain/silage/mineral finish.

Our firewood and sheep wool pellets are perfect for those looking for an eco-friendly and natural solution to heating and gardening needs. We are also happy to donate sheep manure to help you set up your own garden boxes or nourish depleted soil.

We encourage and celebrate gardening and food preservation! If you need help learning to pressure or water bath can, reach out to Dawn at 306-450-7905.
